The US Food and Drug Administration has approved two medications to treat erectile dysfunction, one for women and one for men, according to a statement released on Thursday.
The two drugs are designed to help women who are struggling with sexual dysfunction (sexual problems are a common condition for a woman who has been struggling with this for a long time), but they are not approved for use in men and are not recommended for use in women who have erectile problems, the FDA said.
"We believe that the safety and efficacy of these two medications have been confirmed by the FDA, and that a comprehensive study, and a study of the effects of the two medications, will enable the FDA to approve the medications for use in women with erectile dysfunction."
The FDA said the two drugs are approved for use in women and men and the FDA is reviewing the matter.
The drug is not approved for use in men but is not recommended for use in women who have an existing medical condition such as high blood pressure, low cholesterol, or high blood pressure that is linked to erectile dysfunction. These conditions typically affect one or both of the following:
The FDA also said the FDA does not recommend the two drugs because the risk of side effects is similar for both drugs.
The two drugs are marketed by Eli Lilly, the maker of Viagra, and the company is in talks to produce a generic version of the drug, Lilly's product Lilly ICOS is testing the drug as part of its ongoing clinical trials for the treatment of ED.
According to a Lilly spokesperson, "Our discussions with Lilly believe that Lilly ICOS is working with regulatory authorities in New York, and that Lilly ICOS is working with a partner company to develop a product that will be approved by the FDA," Lilly spokesman Paul Gellert said.
"While we are confident that the FDA will approve the medication for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, we are not confident that our discussions with Lilly will take place in a public forum," Gellert said.
He added that he believes the FDA's discussions with the company "will enable us to approve the medications for use in women with erectile dysfunction."
The FDA will not be involved in the clinical trials of the two drugs, which have been submitted for approval as drugs for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The drug is currently only available through a treatment option called Proscar.The drug is not approved for use in women and men and the FDA is reviewing the matter.
